Snow skiing has been a popular winter time activity in the NC Mountains for many years. Snowboarding and snow tubing have become popular in the past few years and have made snow sports more fun for many more people.
There are seven ski resorts in the NC Mountainsmost offer both skiing and tubing. There are three others offering only snow tubing.
Does it really snow enough to make skiing viable in the NC Mountains? No. But ski operators in the NC Mountains have become experts in generating machine made snow. Most NC ski slopes are in higher and cooler areas. Average winter lows are in these areas are around 20 degrees.
Snow making becomes effective at about 28 degrees. If the humidity is low, it can be made when it is a couple of degrees warmer.
Cataloochee Ski Areain Maggie Valley was the first ski area to open for the 2008/2009 ski season. As of December 5th, they have already built up a base of over six feet in some parts of their slopes.
Catalooche also offers snow tubing, as do most of the ski areas in the NC Mountains. Scaly Mountain, Moonshine Mountain, and Hawksnest offer only snow tubing.
Playing in the snow is great family fun.
